Chocolate Fest Cancelled:
After a discussion with Ravenswood, the HDLGBA  decided to cancel Chocolate Fest in May.  This decision was done with a lot of research by Ravenswood and discussions. There are a lot of risks/ expenses involved in continuing plans without any certainty of where we will be in a few short weeks.

Since things are moving so quickly, and it is difficult to keep up with emails, we have set up new options to receive information by you and/or your staff:
1)  Private Facebook group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/LGMerchants/ (we will livestream board meetings too)
2)  Webpage for merchant updates:  http://longgrove.org/merchants/
3)  WhatsApp group:  please download the app to your phone respond with your cell phone number and business to be added to this new group.
I have been working on keeping our website and social media as updated as possible as quickly as possible.  As the office is closed, please send all updates about your business via email and I will update as soon as possible. Tag @ShopDIneLG on Facebook so I see your posts and can repost.
The website lists who is open and not here (format is not mobile friendly, I am working on that) http://longgrove.org/march-2020-open-closed-in-downtown-long-grove/
Thank you!

Friday, December 6th

10am-5pm
Viking Treasures celebrates St. Nicholas all day (10-5), rain, snow, or shine, on St. Nicholas Day, December 6th.

St. Nicholas walks around town and into most non-restaurant businesses, carrying and distributing citrus fruit (usually Clementines (a.k.a. “cuties”)) as gifts. For Scandinavian countries, and indeed much of Europe, to receive a citrus fruit in December was considered quite a treat even into the 20th century, since in the past they didn’t have the distribution channels we enjoy today.

He reminds people about St. Nicholas’s kindnesses (such as giving anonymous gifts) when he was alive (270-342 CE), and encourage them to do something nice for someone else without expecting any compensation. People often reminisce with me about their celebration of the day, both in the past and currently.

The Long Grove Lions Club chapter has achieved the coveted $1 million raised milestone in its 36-year history of supporting the community.  To commemorate this accomplishment, a public celebration will be held at Buffalo Creek Brewing on Thursday, December 12th to officially write and present the 7-digit barrier-breaking check to a local charity.  Beginning at 6 pm, the Long Grove Lions Club will host a holiday-themed party, which will include: live music (6:30 pm to 8:30 pm) by Chicago’s top 90’s cover band, Run Forrest Run, complimentary food, fresh craft beer, and a historic check presentation ceremony (7:30 pm, media are encouraged to attend and photograph) attended by village trustees and other local dignitaries.   A $10 suggested donation to support Lions Club partner charities will be requested at the door.

We have a mailbox in front of our store where kids can drop their Letters to Santa. The letters will be delivered to the big man himself! 😉

He will be crafting a personal note back to each boy or girl who drops off a letter. Kids can use our template paper or write their own. Parents and kids just need to make sure a complete address is included on the letter so Santa knows where to mail back his note. We have letter templates inside the store and also at The Village Tavern. After hours we’re keeping some templates on a shelf below the mailbox with pencils.

Here’s a few helpful steps to insure that Long Grove businesses are following Health Department guidelines:
–  Food served to customers must be from an approved source and prepared in a licensed food service facility, home prepared offerings are not allowed.
–  Food samples should be offered in a single-serving container when possible. Individual bags or paper liners work best. Please use gloves when preparing your samples for customers.
–  If you are unable to serve individually packaged goods (the cost and time involved in pre-packaging can be challenging), please serve food on a tray that has a cover. Offer tongs, toothpicks, or forks to customers to avoid handling food with their hands.
–  Beverages should be served in disposable plastic cups. Only businesses with a commercial three compartment sink or dishwasher are permitted to use glassware.
–  When serving perishable food items, such as cheese, items need to be discarded after 4 hours

Thank you for helping to keep our visitors happy & safe!

Laurie Caccamo at the Lake County Health Department would be happy to answer any health department related questions you may have.

We are thrilled about Irish Days – entertainment booked, and a lot of interest in this year’s event!  We HIGHLY RECOMMEND being open on Monday, Labor Day with this fest in town.  Please let me know if you will/ will not be so we can advise people at the event and at the Visitor’s Center.  We are working on an activity to get people shopping in stores.  Great event for families and friends.  There will be activities including a scavenger hunt, dog beauty contest, and giveaways with purchase.  More details coming soon.  See http://longgrove.org/festivals/irish-days/ for details.

4. COMED Scam & STRANGE PERSON TARGETING WOMAN OWNED BUSINESSES IN LZ
Be aware of a new scam of a person calling to say your electricity will be turned off unless you pay cash at local walmart.
Also, a couple of our woman-owned businesses have contacted the Chamber in regards to some incidents involving a man entering their business and asking strange business related questions. I have been in contact with Steve Husak, Police Chief of the Lake Zurich Police Department for further information. Here is the information they have thus far:

Recently, some smaller Lake Zurich area businesses have experienced a similarly described male subject entering their businesses. The general description of the subject is: a black male, mid-20s to mid-30s, approximately 6’00”, lean build, 2-3″ braids. A gray vehicle (possibly an Infiniti SUV) has been reported in some of the cases. No threats or crimes have been reported, but there is concern that the subject may be checking the businesses for future crime opportunities. Police departments in the region have been advised of these incidents.

Business owners and employees are reminded to be aware of their surroundings, keep valuables and cash locked up, and to call the police if they observe anything or anyone suspicious.

Road update

Crews have completed the installation of temporary pavement markings and ALL LANES ARE NOW OPEN

This week, Contractor will continue excavating/shaping ditches, soil stabilization and miscellaneous cleanup work throughout the job site.

During the winter months, crews may be working on street light foundations and other electrical work, sidewalk and other miscellaneous items. Crews look to resume pavement construction at the intersections in the spring.

The next HDLGBA board meeting is Tuesday, 12/18 at 5:15pm at Village Hall

Happy Holidays to everyone!  Let me know how the season is going

________________________________________

December 5th (anniversary of the repeal of prohibition):
Construction:

The contractor is planning on doing some prep/clean up work tomorrow and placing temporary asphalt on Friday. Since they were not able to construct the intersections this year due to material availability and current weather conditions, they will be placing some temporary asphalt at the intersections to get all the lanes opened up hopefully by the end of next week, weather dependent.

Also, since it sounds like crews will not be able to install any permanent sidewalk this year, they will be installing temporary asphalt sidewalk and driveways before the winter shutdown.

We are putting together our list of things that went well and things we can improve upon for next year.  Please send your thoughts.
We had a great response from people who stopped into the Visitor’s Center over the weekend.  People are excited to see work being done downtown and are optimistic about the future.  We were pushing our VINTAGE HOLIDAYS with carriage rides, carolers and gifts.  (We are having a little trouble getting carolers, please let Colleen events@longgrove.orgknow if you have someone that can help).  A lot of great recommendations and pictures/videos being posted by visitors on our social media outlets all weekend.
Construction:  Contractor completed the storm sewer on RPC earlier today and have resumed storm sewer installation on Old McHenry Rd starting at Archer. They will continue storm sewer on OMR between Archer and RPC the rest of the week.

Utility work is expected to be completed by the end of August and roadwork will resume in September. We are currently in discussions with the Contractor on what their plans are for construction this year, when they look to resume work, dates for closures, etc. Once plans have been confirmed, I will send out another update.

On the SE corner of Old McHenry Rd and RPC, there will be some private building renovations that is scheduled to begin on 8/27. The road Contractor will need to install the proposed storm sewer at this location prior to the start of the building renovations. Nicor gas is finishing up the installation of new services along Historical Ln into the Stempel parking lot and also working on service installations near the Within Reach building at the NE corner of RPC and Old McHenry Rd. Nicor’s subcontractor is also working on road patching throughout the job limits. Nicor should complete their new service tie-ins next week and once completed, the old gas main removal work should begin shortly after. AT&T crews are still working on their cable relocations. Cable placing (aerial and buried) should be completed by the end of next week and the splicing of their new cables will begin right after. Comcast crews are also onsite working on their relocation work.  As of now, the Contractor still plans on starting the road construction this year as soon as the utility companies are out of the way and completed with their relocation work.  Construction should start before Apple Fest (1 lane Old McHenry Road).
